Course Summary

TRAINING

Dentistry is a medical specialty that is essentially conceived through manual acts. The quality of a student and then of a dental surgeon is measured by his ability to know a significant amount of scientific data and technical gestures, then by his ability to apply the techniques learned throughout his training course. It follows that complications are always analyzed as being defects in the application of rules or knowledge.

This approach is very limited because it does not take into account all the scientific data from neuroscience and behavioral sciences that show that the brain is far from being a perfect machine. On the contrary, human behavior is influenced by many parameters such as stress, fatigue, time pressure, dehydration... Similarly, cognitive biases constantly alter decision-making. This reality has been taken into account in risky human activities such as

aviation or the nuclear industry with unquestionable efficiency.

The implementation of Human Factors is more complicated in medicine or dentistry. Probably because it calls into question too many dogmas both in terms of training and in relationships within care teams. However, several studies on very large numbers of patients show that 80% of complications in medicine and dentistry have an origin directly linked to Human Factors. It is also proven that taking HOF into account improves the quality of care by limiting

the number of serious or non-serious adverse events, but also limits financial losses thanks to a more efficient and rigorous organization.

There are protocols and concepts (non-punishment of error, secure communication, systematic use of checklists, sharing of errors, etc.) that are perfectly known and easily adaptable to medical practices. This course proposes to address them and to reflect on their practical implementation within your practice.

The day’s events
